North Korea fired seven ballistic missiles off its eastern coast Saturday, South Korea said, a violation of U.N. resolutions and an apparent message of defiance to the United States on its Independence Day.

Police on Long Island say a woman armed with a handgun robbed a bank in Melville. Suffolk County Police say the woman entered the Madison National Bank branch Friday and pointed a handgun at a teller and demanded money. She also pointed the weapon at other bank employees and told them not to notify police.

Militants attacked a U.S. coalition base in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, exploding a truck outside the gates, sparking a two-hour gunbattle and killing two American troops, officials said.
